As time went on he even cracked a smile now and then.
Batman's first on screen appearance in the 15 chapter serial BATMAN, played by Lewis Wilson. Although the costume was baggy and the racism blatant, Wilson proved to be a fine Batman and an even better Bruce Wayne.
Batman was an extremely popular Newspaper comic strip in the forties.
In Batman's second movie serial BATMAN AND ROBIN in 1949, the role of the crime fighter was taken over by Robert Lowery. The story lasted 15 chapters and took Bats through many cliffhangers.

Adam West became a household name in 1966 when he took on the role of BATMAN on TV. The show lasted three seasons and showed the campier side of our hero.
Pow! Wham! Bapp! The country loved Adam West.

On two 1972 episodes of the TV cartoon THE NEW SCOOBY DOO MOVIES, produced by Hanna-Barbera, Batman and Robin teamed with Scooby and the gang to battle The Joker and The Penguin. Batman was voiced, again, by Olan Soule. The episodes were entitled: The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair and The Caped Crusader Caper. Thanks to Joel Baxter.
Beginning in 1973, SUPERFRIENDS aired on Saturday mornings featuring Batman and Robin teaming with Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman. It was replaced by several similar incarnations including CHALLANGE OF THE SUPERFRIENDS in 1978-79. Until 1985, Batman's voice was provided by Olan Soule and Robin's by Casey Kasem.

In two 1978 TV films LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES and LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES: THE ROAST, a campy confrontation took place between the heroes and their arch-enemies. It is most notable for the fact that both Adam West and Burt Ward returned as Batman and Robin. Frank Gorshin also reprised his role from the 60's TV series as The Riddler.
In 1981 and 1982, Hostess ran a string of advertisements featuring DC Comics heroes to sell their different snack products. This was one of two which featured Batman.

In the late eighties, Batman got back his original hard edge.
In Tim Burton's 1989 feature film BATMAN, Michael Keaton took on the role of the Dark Knight and was a success with audiences. He returned for one sequel.
Michael Keaton in BATMAN RETURNS in 1992. His costume changed slightly from the first film, but he gave another excellent performance. Pity he called it quits after this one.
After Bruce Wayne had his back broken by Bane, the role of Batman was temporarily taken over by Azreal, better known as Jean-Paul Valley. After defeating Bane, the power went to his head and he invented a new high-tech costume. He became as dangerous as any villain Batman had ever faced.
Jean Paul continued to become more and more out of control. He even changed his costume becoming more high-tech each time and more violent. This frame is from the June 1994 issue of DETECTIVE COMICS (#675).
The original Bruce Wayne Batman recovered and returned to defeat the Jean-Paul Batman and reclaim his reign as The Dark Knight.
The animated Batman in the 90's on TV was considered by most to be the best incarnation to date. He was voiced by Kevin Conroy.
In the third Batman film, BATMAN FOREVER, the role was taken over by Val Kilmer. Kilmer made a good Bruce Wayne, but unfortunately Batman became a little more than a joke in this one.
If George Clooney had played the role in the original 1989 film, he would have given Michael Keaton some competition. By the time this fourth Bat-film came along in 1997, BATMAN AND ROBIN, the story had become so far-fetched and too many characters introduced that Batman took a back seat.
In the futuristic TV cartoon BATMAN BEYOND, Bruce Wayne is a 70-something recluse (Kevin Conroy) who trains a new hero, a high school student named Terry (voiced by Will Friedle) in a costume of the future which even has stealth capabilities.
Debuting in November 2001, The Cartoon Network's series JUSTICE LEAGUE was an immediate hit. Although not appearing in every adventure, Batman is an important member. Still voiced to perfection by Kevin Conroy.
Although he makes only a brief appearance, telling the brief history of the characters starring in BIRDS OF PREY on the WB in 2002, he still resembles the Tim Burton incarnation. He's played by Bruce Thomas.
Another past due release from Warner Brothers was this 2003 Feature length DVD BATMAN: MYSTERY OF THE BATWOMAN. Nothing less than outstanding. As always, top notch production values. Kevin Conroy returns as The Batman. Click the link below to purchase it from Amazon.
