The Riddler only made two comic book appearances in the forties, both in 1948. Edward Nigma (get it? Enimga!) was an intelligent puzzler who enjoyed outwitting Batman with brilliant and sometimes deadly mind teasers.
Nigma as he appeared in the 1966 comic story THE RIDDLE-LESS ROBBERIES OF THE RIDDLER.
On the 1966 TV series BATMAN, The Riddler had the honor of being the Duo's first villain ever faced on Network TV. Frank Gorshin played the role and was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal. During the second season he was absent, but did return in the third season for an appearance in RING AROUND THE RIDDLER.
Former Addams Family patriarch John Astin took over the role of The Riddler for a two-part episode in the BATMAN series' second season. He had some fine moments, but his portrayal is basically unmemorable to the general Batman fan base.
On the 60's TV cartoon produced by Filmation THE ADVENTURES OF BATMAN, The Riddler stumped the Dynamic Duo in the voice of Ted Knight.
During the 70's he continued to be a favorite Bat-villain and made the cover several times.
In a 1978 TV film, THE LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES, a live action Justice League appeared fighting the baddies, albeit in a tongue-in-cheek manner. The result, basically unmemorable, was highlighted by the appearances of Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin, as well as Frank Gorshin reprising his role of The Riddler.

From 1992 thru 1999 on BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES, later THE BATMAN ADVENTURES, The Riddler was portrayed by John Glover. He debuted in IF YOU'RE SO SMART, WHY AREN'T YOU RICH? (11/18/92) and returned the following week in WHAT IS REALITY? (11/24/92).

In the 1995 film BATMAN FOREVER, Jim Carrey assumed the role of the Riddler to Val Kilmer's Batman. "Riddle me this, riddle me that, who's affraid of the big black Bat?"
The Riddler in the comics always has very attractive, uh, Riddlerettes?
A slighly different look for the animated TV Riddler, but still voiced by John Glover.
The Riddler can cause mayhem elsewhere. Case in point, this April 2004 issue of GREEN ARROW.
